Laser Exploration

During a visit to Paris in February, I discovered the wonderful street that is 'Rue du Mail'. Lined with interior design and fabric shops, the street gave me a huge amount of inspiration for my final collection.

I noticed that texture was everywhere. Whether printed in a visual manner or sewn onto fabric in relief, there was a clear trend of texture being used within interior textiles. One fabric collection which caught my eye was Harlequin's Momentum 7 & 8 collections which used a rage of weaving and embroidery techniques to create texture. The fabric 'Lunette' stood out in particular, made up of small cut circles sewn upon a simple natural looking fabric.

'Lunette' inspired me to create some textured fabrics for my final collection. I began by laser cutting simple moth shapes in polyester so that the fabric wouldn't fray when cut. I then progressed into laser cutting more intricate moth shapes with cut out detail.

To add an even more textured feel to the moths I began printing texture from some of my watercolour mark-making onto the fabric using sumblimation printing, before cutting the moth shapes, giving them more definition.

The final step was to sew the delicate little moths onto my fabric, giving them movement and texture.
